| ARTICLE: Sacramento In-Depth |
Citrus Heights, California is a part of the greater Sacramento area. Along with Arden-Aracade and Roseville, it makes up the suburbs of California's state capital. Sacramento and its neighboring cities were founded in the wake of the 1849 gold rush that put San Francisco on the map. Gold fever resulted in the largest migration in U.S. history, as people waded into the Sacramento River seeking new fortunes.
As California's capital city, Sacramento is home to approximately 2 million residents. The nearby Citrus Heights has a population of 89,000, with similar population sizes in Arden Arcade (96,025) and Roseville (103,783). Area residents enjoy a high quality of life, thanks to the year-round sunny weather that allows for biking, hiking and other outdoor activities.
Citrus Heights residents also take advantage of Sacramento's bustling economic sector, which includes pharmaceuticals, food processing, aerospace and national defense. Per capita income in 2004 was $33,338.
Suburban Citrus Heights residents live within working distance of the region currently seen as a national entrepreneurial leader. Inc. Magazine ranked the Sacramento area 19th in its 2006 list of "Best Cities for Doing Business," and in 2005 Fast Company listed it as one of the "Top 10 Fast Cities - Emerging Hubs for Creative Talent."
Unitek IT Education, one of Northern California's top information technology training providers, chose the Sacramento Region in November 2006 as the site for its newest facility. Other major employers in Citrus Heights and Sacramento County include:
- Ampac Fine Chemicals LLC
- California State University
- Gen Corp Inc
- Kaiser Foundation Hospital
- State and local government
The city's redevelopment plan, completed in 2003, and its Economic Development Division have modernized and expanded the Citrus Heights economy.
