ARTICLE: Roseville In-Depth
Roseville is in the Sacramento metropolitan area, about 16 miles north of Sacramento, the state capital of California. Historically, Roseville was home to the Maidu Indians, but with the discovery of California gold in 1849, Roseville was settled by Americans moving west. Roseville was built at the intersection of the Central Pacific and California Central rail lines. Today, it is the home of an annual One Root festival, drawing from cultures around the world to celebrate the arts.

In early 2005, Roseville’s population was a little over 100,000 people. With a growth rate of 38 percent, Roseville is still one of the fastest-growing areas in the state. There are over 5,700 registered businesses in Roseville, and the City estimates about 74,610 jobs with a work force of 49,700, making Roseville a major importer of labor. The top employers are:
  • Hewlett-Packard
  • Kaiser Permanente
  • Sutter Roseville Medical Center
  • Union Pacific Railroad
  • City of Roseville

In 1988, Roseville began redeveloping its downtown, and spent tens of millions of dollars to revitalize its historic areas. This investment has been successful, making Roseville a regional shopping destination and giving it the ninth-highest retail sales of all California cities. According to the Sacramento Business Journal, 14 of the region's top-growing companies are located in Roseville, including professional and financial services, automotive-related, and tech-based businesses.
