Oxnard, California was originally a sugar beet factory. When the Southern Pacific Railroad constructed a spur near the factory to ship the beets, a town quickly sprang up. Oxnard, situated along the Pacific Coastline in Ventura County, is 60 miles northwest of Los Angeles and 35 miles south of Santa Barbara. With an average temperature of 73 degrees, Oxnard boasts some of the richest agricultural land in California. Strawberries, which grow virtually year-round, are the most valuable crop in Oxnard, which will host the 24th Annual California Strawberry Festival this year. Influential in '80s punk rock, it also has a prominent musical scene. Oxnard's Port of Hueneme is the busiest commercial port between Los Angeles and San Francisco, and is vital to trade with Pacific Rim economies. The population of Oxnard is approximately 185,000, with a large Hispanic influence. The median income for a household in Oxnard is $49,000, with a median house value of $530,000.
