ARTICLE: Monterey In-Depth
The city of Monterey, California hugs the coastline at Monterey Bay, nearly halfway between the northern and southern boundaries of the state. Monterey is called the "Cradle of History" and "California's First City." It is known for its rich history of resident artists, who built a community in Monterey in the 1800s. Monterey's waterfront also houses historic Cannery Row, a shopping district that was once the hub of the sardine-packing industry.

Monterey is home to several schools, including the Naval Postgraduate School, the Defense Language Institute, and the Fleet Numerical Oceanography Center. Monterey's population is about 31,000, and the household median income is about $50,000. It is famous for its agriculture, including the celebrated Monterey Jack cheese, and its fishing industry. The organic produce market has also grown recently.

Because of its location on the coast, Monterey attracts tourists interested in the sea habitat. The sea life draws tourists--there are sea otters and sea lions on the coast--and scuba divers explore the ocean from Monterey in the thousands. The Monterey Bay Aquarium is one of the largest in North America, and it hosts several important marine science labs.
