ARTICLE: Modesto In-Depth
Part of the fertile Central Valley, Modesto, California is known for its year-round mild weather. Often called the city of "Water, Wealth, Contentment and Health," the city is located in the center of the state.

Modesto is the seat of Stanislaus County. Though its population exceeds 200,000, Modesto maintains an atmosphere of old-fashioned, small-town hospitality. Located on Highway 99, Modesto is only a 90-minute drive from the San Francisco Bay Area. East of Modesto are the Sierra Nevada mountains, Yosemite National Park and the famed gold country.

Originally a stop on the railroad connecting Sacramento and Los Angeles, Modesto is the heart of a great agricultural region: the San Joaquin Valley. Farmers raise almonds, apricots, melons, tomatoes, wine grapes, peaches, walnuts. Dairy and poultry products are grown and processed here as well.

The top five employers in Modesto (in descending order) are:
  • Stanislaus County
  • E and J Gallo Winery
  • Modesto City Schools
  • Memorial Medical Center
  • Del Monte Foods

These employers, as well as other nationally recognized food companies who run large operations in the area, employ thousands of agricultural and other workers. The service industry in Modesto is also expanding, as its infrastructure matures. The median income for a household in the Modesto is about $45,000.
