Local highlights include the Great Mall of the Bay Area, which is the largest enclosed shopping mall in Northern California, and has at 1.1 million square feet of commercial space. Milpitas also maintains over twenty community parks, a dog park and 18 tennis courts. The City provides an abundance of recreational activities, including aquatics, cultural arts, theater, sports leagues and senior activities.
Because of the influence of Silicon Valley, much of the industry in Milpitas is technical. The top five employers are:

Milpitas is considered such a desirable location for high-tech business that many companies have made it their headquarters. Thousands of employees pour into Milpitas to work, doubling its daytime population.
Milpitas' diversity is apparent in the makeup of its population. The breakdown of its ethnicity as of the year 2000 was Asians at 52% (Filipinos being the largest Asian group), Caucasians at 24%, Hispanics at 17%, and African-Americans at 3%. 60% of Milpitas' population speaks two or more languages.
