ARTICLE: Irvine In-Depth
Irvine is the third-largest city in Orange County, with a population of approximately 171,000. Orange County is home to nearly 3 million residents. Irvine was founded as a planned city in 1971 and covers over 55 square miles near its larger Orange County neighbors, Santa Ana and Anaheim.

Located about half an hour south of the tourist center of Anaheim, Irvine is about 20 minutes from the Pacific Coast of Southern California. It is close to Newport Beach and Huntington Beach, both famous for their recreation and shopping districts. The recent real estate boom in California has inflated Irvine's cost of living to 83% higher than the national average. Its job growth rate is slightly higher than other Southern California communities, however, at 3.15%. Its average per-capita income is also nearly 42% above the national average, at $32,196.

Irvine is home to many technology and software firms, including eMachines, Linksys, and Gateway. Anaheim's tourist industry also provides many jobs for Irvine residents, including Disneyland, which generates over $3.6 billion alone each year. The park accounts for around one-half of the $7.3 billion that visitors spend in Orange County each year.

Other major employers in Orange County include:
  • Universities and community colleges
  • Restaurants
  • Federal government
  • Boeing Aerospace
  • State government
