| ARTICLE: Inland Empire In-Depth |
The Inland Empire is a large region east of Los Angeles, CA, made up of Riverside and San Bernardino Counties. It is defined as the area between Los Angeles and Palm Springs, two hours east, and is 50 miles wide and 60 miles long. Inland Empire residents boast that they are "45 minutes from the slopes and 45 minutes from the beach," and they're right--its location is equidistant from the Pacific Ocean and the San Bernardino mountain range.
These recreational activities make the area popular for visitors. The Inland Empire's resident population was estimated at 3,254,824 in 2004 by the US Census Bureau. This amounts to nearly 10% of the population of the entire state. Growth began in the 1970s and 1980s, when people began to move away from Los Angeles in search of more affordable housing.
Manufacturing is a huge industry in the Inland Empire. The Inland Empire draws many manufacturers for its strong labor force, natural resources, more affordable real estate, and freeway access. Everything from t-shirts to auto parts is manufactured across its 27,000 square miles.
Other major industries reflect Los Angeles' economy:
- Service
- Trade
- Transportation
Its climate, size, affordability, and ease of access to the Los Angeles metropolitan area have made the Inland Empire home to nearly 3.3 million California residents. Its economy has slowed over the past year, but unemployment in the area is only slightly higher than the national average.
