With a median family income of $37,597, El Monte has established itself as a working-class suburb, where most residents commute to the Los Angeles metro area for work. Once famous for having the largest lion farm in the world (home to the MGM lion), El Monte is known as a family-oriented community. Only one in 10 people here lived alone in 2000.
Real estate has grown in the El Monte area since the boom of the late '90s, and housing subdivisions are popular in many El Monte neighborhoods. Still, the biggest industries are based in and around Los Angeles, and include:
- Entertainment
- Tourism
- Apparel production
- Transportation
Auto dealerships employ the largest number of people in El Monte, followed by healthcare and education sectors. Some residents manage successful small businesses throughout the city, but most find work elsewhere.
