ARTICLE: Canyon Country In-Depth
Canyon Country is part of the city of Santa Clarita. The fourth largest city in Los Angeles County, Santa Clarita is made up of a collection of previously separate communities. Canyon Country, Saugus, Valencia, Newhall, and Castaic were incorporated into Santa Clarita in 1987. As of the 2000 U.S. Census, Santa Clarita had a population of 151,088 people, while in 2005 the California Department of Finance put the figure at 170,000. Since 2003, the city has experienced a healthy 3% growth rate, compared to the statewide level of 1.7%.

The 2004 median household income for Santa Clarita was estimated at $76,127, far beyond the median household income for Los Angeles County at $53,239. Included in Santa Clarita's main attractions are the California Institute of the Arts and the Six Flags Magic Mountain amusement park.

Besides local government, Santa Clarita's largest employers are Six Flags California and Princess Cruises. More than 33% of overall employment in Canyon Country is in the services sector. Retail and wholesale trade make up 18%, and manufacturing the third-largest, with 13%.

Good news for businesses: Santa Clarita expects over 30,000 newcomers to make their homes in the Santa Clarita Valley between 2006 and 2011. In each of the previous five years, employment has grown by 5%, amounting to roughly 20,000 jobs. To add to the positive outlook, Santa Clarita was chosen by the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation as one of five finalists for the award of Most Business Friendly City 2006.
