ARTICLE: Alhambra In-Depth
Named after "The Tales of the Alhambra" by Washington Irving, Alhambra is located within the "Sixty Mile Circle," an area boasting the headquarters of two-thirds of the 100 biggest corporations in California, with Los Angeles at its epicenter. Also known as the Gateway to the San Gabriel Valley, Alhambra's attractions include the Burke Heritage Park, the Alhambra Historical Museum, and Shorb Garden. In addition, Alhambra plays host (along with San Gabriel) to an annual celebration of the Chinese New Year: the San Gabriel Valley Lunar New Year Parade & Festival. If that isn't enough, the Rose Bowl Stadium is located only four miles away in the city of Pasadena.

Part of Los Angeles County, Alhambra has a population of 85,804, well behind the three largest cities in the metro area--Los Angeles, Long Beach and Glendale. The median family income in Alhambra is $43,245. Besides local government, Alhambra's major employers include Costco, Target, Southwest Administration, and the International Extrusion Company.

Alhambra has recently seen some impressive redevelopment projects, winning prizes from the California Redevelopment Association on three recent occasions:
  • The CRA Award of Excellence in 2005 for Community Revitalization.
  • The CRA Award of Excellence in 2004 for Public Spaces. This award was won for the opening of the downtown Alhambra Renaissance Plaza, which has jump-started the renewal of downtown business and retail.
  • The 2000 Award of Excellence in 2000 for Mixed Use Development. This award was won for a residential and commercial project: the Plaza on Main.
