ARTICLE: Tucson In-Depth
Nicknamed "The Old Pueblo," Tucson is the bustling county seat of Arizona's Pima County. The city population of 521,605 is expected to add another hundred thousand Arizona residents in the next two years, swelling the greater metropolitan area to more than a million persons. Arizona's second-largest city, Tucson was ranked 169 out of 280 metropolitan statistical areas for median household income in the 2000 United States Census.

The University of Arizona continues to be the city's main employer, while a service economy continues to support the heavy local tourism industry. The infusion of military bases and contractors contribute significantly to Tucson's growth. High-tech industries are springing up in support of the U.S. Army Intelligence Center at Fort South Huachuca. Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, just south of the city, is another major Arizona employer. Top high-tech employers include:
  • IBM
  • Universal Avionics
  • Raytheon Missile Systems
  • America Online
  • Bombardier
  • Intuit, Inc.
  • Texas Instruments

Tucson is undergoing rapid economic growth to match its surge in population. While it has a relatively low per capita income of $27,244, 82% of the national average, the Old Pueblo enjoys a robust 9.1% growth rate, a whopping 21% above the national growth average.
