Scottsdale, which is part of the Phoenix metro area, is located in central Arizona's Sonoran Desert and is known as the "West's Most Western Town." The city is a magnet for tourists, with a year-round median temperature of 72˚, approximately 200 golf courses, and a strong Southwest art focus.

Scottsdale's approximately 125 galleries, studios, and museums complement its numerous festivals, such as the three-month-long Celebration of Fine Art every winter. Visitors can explore the local Native American culture, the Desert Botanical Gardens, or Frank Lloyd Wright's home and school, Taliesin West. Football fans can attend the annual Fiesta Bowl and can look forward to the 2008 Super Bowl XLII.

Residents of Scottsdale enjoy a strong economy fueled by tourism, business services, high technology, biomedical industries, and retail. From 1990-2005, job growth was 63%. The largest employers in 2005 were Scottsdale Healthcare, General Dynamics, the Mayo Clinic-Scottsdale, the Scottsdale Unified School District, and the City of Scottsdale. Declining industries are finance, insurance, and real estate.

The city has a population of over 226,000 and has seen a staggering growth rate of 294% in 30 years. Per-capita personal income for 2004 was $31,133, with an annual growth rate of 10.3 over the last 35 years, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce.
