ARTICLE: Mesa In-Depth
Mesa, Arizona is part of the Phoenix-Mesa metro area and is the third-largest city in Arizona. In 2006, the population was 455,984--a 58% increase over the last 16 years. Mesa was voted third in Money Magazine's 2006 Best Cities to Live In and has received other national awards for its business environment, educational system, and job opportunities. A warm climate, numerous cultural and recreational activities, and an aggressive business plan for the future all contribute to Mesa's success.

Mesa's largest employers are the Mesa Public Schools, Banner Health Systems, Boeing, the City of Mesa, and AT&T. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, the per-capita income for 2004 was $31,133. Income growth rate over the last 35 years was 10.3%, which was 37% above the national average.

Mesa takes pride in its highly educated workforce and in the partnerships of local companies and educational institutions. Existing and developing business sectors in Mesa are in aerospace, industrial, retail/tourism, technology, and healthcare. Three declining industries are wired-communication carriers, plastics-product manufacturing, and motor vehicle-part manufacturing.

Visual and performing arts venues include the Mesa Arts Center, the Arizona Museum for Youth, the Mesa Southwest Museum, the Mesa Symphony, and the Southwest Shakespeare Company. Outdoor enthusiasts take advantage of the warm weather to play golf at any one of the 40 local courses or to visit the Superstition Mountains, home of the Lost Dutchman Gold Mine.
