If you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of Phoenix, Arizona, you might want to go "up the hill" to Flagstaff. The term refers to the mile high ascent one takes on Interstate 17 to get from Phoenix (1,117 ft) to Flagstaff (7,000 ft). The Flagstaff Metro area, which includes the more residential suburbs Mund's Park, Doney Park, and Kachina Village, has a population of approximately 100,000 people.

Tourism is a major industry in Flagstaff due to its proximity to great skiing and the Grand Canyon, which is only 1.5 hours away. Snowbowl is the area's most popular ski resort, and tourists can take a ski lift up to its peak at 13,000 ft. for some amazing views.

In 2004, this area of Arizona posted an average personal income of $26,362. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce's Bureau of Economic Analysis, the average Flagstaff resident earns 20% less than the average American. The average income has grown by 9.4% over the past 35 years, which is about 25% higher than the national average.
