Anchorage, Alaska, nestled in the Cook Inlet of the south-central region of Alaska, is the largest city in the largest state of the U.S. With a diverse population topping 260,000 people, Anchorage is home to approximately 42% of the state's residents. Anchorage, which has been named "All-American City" four times, is known for its natural beauty and economic vitality.

Visitors to Anchorage take in popular outdoor destinations, including Chugach State Park, the six million acres of Denali National Park & Preserve, and many area glaciers. Anchorage offers opportunities to watch bears, whales, moose, and the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis). Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy camping, hiking, hunting, winter sports, and fishing for salmon and halibut. According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, Anchorage's per-capita income in 2004 was $37,058, 12% above the national average. In 2003, the largest city employers were Providence Health System Alaska, Safeway Stores, Inc., Wal-Mart/Sam's Club, Fred Meyer, and Alaska Airlines.

Forecasted growth for Anchorage remains in the service sector, with declining growth in the oil/gas industry and government. Tourists and conventions bring sizeable income to the city each year. Anchorage is also a major transportation hub for passengers and freight, serviced by the Alaska Railroad, the Port of Anchorage, and the Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport.
