ARTICLE: Mobile In-Depth
The port city of Mobile is located in southwest Alabama on Mobile Bay, leading to the Gulf of Mexico. It has a population of approximately 190,000 people, 83% of whom employed in the service industries such as trade, transportation, distribution, and government. Mobile's per capita income is $23, 840 with an average annual growth rate of 7.6 over the last 35 years, according to a 2004 U.S. Department of Commerce report.

This city of French origin is known as the "Azalea Capital of the World" and is host to a number of tourist attractions, including the Museum of Mobile, the Gulf Coast Exploreum, the Bellingrath Gardens & Home, and the USS Alabama. Popular events include the Senior Bowl, the Bayfest music festival, and the nation's original Mardi Gras.

The largest employers are the Mobile County Public School System, the University of South Alabama, USA Health System, the Mobile Infirmary Medical Center, Wal-Mart, and the City of Mobile. High growth/high demand industries are aviation/aerospace, healthcare, and shipbuilding. Other established companies in Mobile belong to the chemical and paper products industry.
