The Business Council of Alabama and the Alabama Technology Network recently honored top manufacturers in the state. On the list:
- Nucor Steel Decatur, LLC
- Jenkins Brick Co.
- Wildwood Electronics Inc.
- Decatur Plastics Inc.
At the ceremony, former U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta noted, "Around Alabama, your companies, big and small alike, are leading the state's economic expansion and manufacturing boom." Mineta went on to cite manufacturing business as one of the reasons behind Alabama's exceptionally low unemployment rate of 3.2%. In 2006, manufacturers in Alabama produced a total real output of nearly $28.3 billion, and employed 302,000 residents.
Alabama income varies widely, based on a worker's education and experience. Entry-level accountants in Birmingham make $42,200 on average, according to Salary.com. Architectural drafters earn $42,300, while computer engineers earn about $55,300. No education or career training program can guarantee success in a career or a specific salary, but training in a specialized field can give potential employees the upper hand in competitive markets.
