Tennessee Colleges & Universities: Career Education & Training

Published: November, 2010

Tennessee plays important economic and educational roles in the southern United States. In 2000, the US census reported that nearly a quarter of Tennessee's residents had attended college. Tennessee's colleges and universities prepare graduates for the more than 3.5 million jobs that exist within the state. Major economic outputs for the state include textiles, cotton, cattle, and electricity.

With nearly 1.5 million residents, Nashville is Tennessee's capital and largest metropolitan area. Situated on the Cumberland River, Nashville is world famous for its musical heritage. Nashville is home to several record companies, including the four largest in the world:
  • Sony BMG
  • EMI
  • Universal
  • Warner

In southwestern Tennessee, Memphis is also home to a number of musical traditions, including some of the great pioneers of blues, rock, and gospel music. Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, and B.B. King all got their starts in Memphis. Combined with the annual World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest, the largest barbecue event in the world, Memphis boasts a culture of creativity and fun that attracts students to its elite institutions of higher education.

Many students are drawn to Tennessee's cultural traditions and prosperous economy, choosing bachelor's and master's degrees that can improve careers and lead to job opportunities. Colleges and universities in Memphis, Nashville, and many other Tennessee cities offer strong programs in business, education, and accounting.
