Smyrna, GA Colleges, Universities and Technical Schools--Get Your Degree

Published: November, 2010

With a population of almost 50,000, Smyrna, Georgia is Atlanta's closest suburb (roughly 10 miles away), which means that it should have been hardest hit by the urban sprawl for which Atlanta is so famous. However, city leaders enacted a community-wide development initiative called "The Village Green." As part of this initiative, a community center and 20,000 square-foot library were erected. In addition, large-scale real estate plans were drawn up to create thousands of upscale homes priced at $1 million.

Because of the success of The Village Green, other cities and communities in the Atlanta area have followed suit and enacted their own redevelopment programs to control the tide of urban sprawl and rapid population increases. Although, Smyrna is now famous for its affluent neighborhoods and pricey homes, it's also known outside of highbrow circles. It was once the corporate headquarters for the now-obsolete World Championship Wrestling.

Per capita income for Smyrna is almost $28,000 a year, with household income approaching $48,000 a year. Roughly 40% of adults over the age of 25 possess a bachelor's degree or higher, and almost 86% have a high school diploma. Technology and telecommunications are two of the hottest industries in the area, with IBM providing the largest number of jobs. Despite Smyrna's close proximity to Atlanta, only 2% of the population commutes to the city on a regular basis. It would seem that the vast majority stays in Smyrna day after day.
