The name "Skokie" comes from "Skoutay" or "Scoti," which means "marsh" in the Algonquian tongue. Skokie, IL, a village in Cook County, has a population of 63,348 according to the 2000 US Census. It is home to a large Jewish population, many of whom are Holocaust survivors. The "Skokie Swift," now known as the Yellow Line of the Chicago Transit Authority rapid transit system, terminates on Dempster Street in Skokie. Lincolnwood, Wilmette, and Evanston are the cities nearest to Skokie, with Chicago relatively close as well.

The median household income in Skokie is a healthy $57,375. The per capita income is $27,136, compared to $21,587 nationally. The majority of Skokie's workforce is employed in the manufacturing and retail trades, as well as professional, scientific, and technical services.

Federal Mogul, a gasket manufacturing company, is the top employer in Skokie, with medical center Rush North Shore coming in second. Many of Skokie's top employers came as recently as 1999, which means that Skokie has been successful in terms of generating employment opportunities.

The village is poised to add more jobs in the health science sector. Forest City Enterprise purchased the former Pfizer pharmaceutical property for $43 million, which included one million square feet of research and office space across nine buildings. The new Illinois Technology Innovation Campus will create more than 3,000 on-site jobs in bioscience and technology, 10,000 ripple-effect jobs, and 1,000 construction jobs.
