Colleges and Universities in Pembroke Pines, FL: Find Degree and Certificate Programs

Published: November, 2010

Officially founded in 1960, Pembroke Pines, Florida started out as a one-square-mile town, with little to offer its residents due to spatial restrictions. But recent developments expanded city limits so that the current population reaches just over 150,000 residents. Probably the biggest factor contributing to the city's rapid expansion was the fallout from Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Thousands of displaced residents from neighboring Miramar, Hollywood, and Green Meadow flocked to Pembroke Pines, pushing the population from 65,000 to its current size.

Pembroke Pines originally derived its name from its location along Pembroke Road and the many pine trees that adorned this popular thoroughfare. During its early days, the city's economy was mainly based on agriculture, but growing population demands put tremendous strain on the education system in the area. City officials created a charter school system to handle the overcrowding. Thus, it only made sense that various universities would have to be funded in order to accept recently graduated high school recruits. To this day, education is one of the largest industries within city limits, although retail accounts for nearly 13% of its overall economy.

Nearly 85% of all Pembroke Pines, FL residents over the age of 25 possess a high school degree, and roughly 20% possess a bachelor's degree or higher. As such, employers have access to a relatively educated workforce. This is reflected in the fact that the median income for a Pembroke Pines household is approximately $53,000 a year.
