Ohio Colleges & Universities: A Midwest Education

Published: November, 2010

Ohio's cities and countryside provide vital manufacturing and agricultural resources. Among Ohio's vibrant urban centers, Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Toledo are the largest. The capital city, Columbus, is the 15th largest in the country and home to over 100,000 college students. Cleveland, whose metropolitan population consists of over 2 million people, was ranked as the most livable city in the United States by The Economist in 2005.

According to projections by the Ohio Job & Family Services, Office of Workforce Development, the Ohio economy is expected to create 425,000 new jobs in the upcoming decade. Although these jobs will provide opportunities for individuals of all education levels, prospects for employees with advanced education and training are especially positive. Occupations that require postsecondary training in Ohio will increase at a rate of 13.5% (compared to 4.9% for other jobs).

Ohio is one of the country's leading producers of durable goods such as machinery, automobile parts, and steel. Other manufacturing industries include processed foods, tools, and industrial chemicals. Some of the more well known brands in Ohio include:
  • Proctor & Gamble
  • Day-Glo Paints
  • Smuckers Jams
  • Goodyear Tires

In addition to prolific manufacturing, Ohio maintains a strong agricultural sector as part of the Corn Belt, where half of the corn grown in the US originates. Ohio is also recognized for its exceptional healthcare facilities, including the Cleveland Clinic, which is consistently ranked among the top hospitals in the country.
