Norwood, MA College Degree Programs: Get Career Training in the Boston Area

Published: November, 2010

Norwood, Massachusetts survived the dramatic postwar decline of the traditional New England textile economy and remade itself by luring technical, manufacturing and wholesale companies. Early economic growth of Norwood was dependent on the Neponset River. The city was a second parish of Dedham, MA until it was incorporated in 1872. Norwood's assimilation of immigrants has made it more culturally diverse than other New England towns of similar size.

Located 14 miles south of Boston, Norwood is a small bedroom community of approximately 28,000 people. The average single-family property value is $290,977 with a median household income of $58,421. Norwood was the first town in Massachusetts to adopt the Town Manager form of government, in which administrative control of city departments is given to an appointed professional rather than elected officials. As a result, Norwood has a balanced budget and consequently provides a wide range of services to its citizens. The town government also recently revitalized the downtown area, which includes the Fiddlehead Players Theater--an established theater group.

Norwood's dozen or more car dealerships, Putnam Investments, Analog, and Norwood Hospital are some of the top industries and employers in the area. A number of recreational and heritage parks surround Norwood with activities that include horseback riding, mountain biking, fishing, kayaking, and bird watching. Winter activities such as cross-country skiing are also popular. Norwood is located in Norfolk County, which is known as the County of Presidents for the four presidents who were born there--John Adams, John Quincy Adams, John F. Kennedy, and George Herbert Walker Bush.

Norwood's proximity to Boston offers students the cultural and educational opportunities available in large metropolitan area.
