Nevada Colleges & Universities: Career Education Programs

Published: November, 2010

From the entertainment capital of the world, Las Vegas, to the majestic Sierra Nevada Mountains, Nevada's variety is unparalleled. While known for legalized gambling and limited government, Nevada also offers a high quality of living.

After many years as the fastest-growing state, Nevada's growth rate fell slightly behind Arizona's in 2006. But that's nothing to sneeze at: nearly 225,000 new residents moved to Nevada from within the U.S. in 2006, and about 66,000 moved from outside the country.

With a population of about 553,800, Las Vegas, located near Yucca Mountain in Clark County, is the largest city in Nevada. However, many more people live in the surrounding Las Vegas metropolitan area. Las Vegas is famous for its lavish casino resorts, and offers many career opportunities in tourism and entertainment. Carson City, Nevada's capital, and Reno, the "Biggest Little City in the World," are other population centers. Beautiful Lake Tahoe, a short drive away from Reno, offers one-of-a-kind scenic beauty as well as summer and winter recreation opportunities.

With a growing economy, Nevada is a solid place to begin a degree program or a career. Here are some key economic stats:
  • Nevada's total state income was $88 billion in 2003.
  • Mean annual income is $36,000.
  • Nevada is ranked 19th in the nation in per capita income.

Most career opportunities in Nevada are found in tourism, agriculture, mining, food service, and electronics.
