With a population of over 60,000 residents, Marietta, Georgia is one of the largest suburbs in the Atlanta metropolitan area (4.25 million residents). But those who live in Marietta might not consider this region a suburb, since Atlanta's urban sprawl has hit Marietta harder than most other surrounding cities. Thanks to Lockheed Martin, a naval air station, numerous universities, and a thriving local economy, Marietta is a bustling city in its own right.

Marietta was not always a busy metropolis. It was hit hard during Sherman's March to the Sea during the Civil War. To this day, there are only two buildings still standing that managed to survive the citywide burning, one of which is the Kennesaw House (built in 1845).

Like many other areas of Atlanta, Marietta is very into high-tech firms, information technology, and health care management. Lockheed Martin was once the largest single employer in the area, but when it cut its workforce in the early 1990s, the gap was filled by Cobb County public schools, Home Depot, Publix, WellStar Health System, and the Cobb County Government.

Per capita income in Marietta, GA is approximately $24,000 a year, while the household income is over $41,000 a year. Roughly one-third of adults over the age of 25 possess a bachelor's degree or higher, and nearly 85% hold at least a high school diploma. Given Marietta's push towards technology, higher education is often a prerequisite for the many skilled jobs that are available.
