Degrees and Training Programs in Fall River, MA: Colleges and Universities

Published: November, 2010

Fall River is located 52 miles south of Boston and, along with New Bedford, makes up the vital South Coast region of Massachusetts' Bristol County. Originally settled in 1670, Fall River first took the name of the Town of Troy when it was incorporated in 1803. Ironically, there is no "Fall River" waterway near the town that took the name in 1834. The nearest river is the Quequechan. The new city adopted its motto (still used today), "We'll Try."

Fall River thrived from the mid-1890s through the 1920s as the nation's largest producer of textiles made from cotton. Its 18 textile mills and 15 cotton manufacturing corporations brought fresh residents down from Boston. The U.S. Census of 2000 reported 91,938 residents. Today's median income is $ 37,204, compared to a national average of $46,242.

Fall River now claims a reversal of the economic misfortune that plagued it over much of the 20th century. It bolstered its infrastructure recently with more than $300 million in improvements, spending $50 million on roads and more than $30 million in water main restoration and replacements. Fall City also recently saw construction of 1,000 new single-family homes. And the city has lured new businesses, including Silverline Manufacturing, Avant Immunotherapeutics, and Meditech. Fall River's top employers include:
  • Charlton Memorial Hospital
  • Saint Anne's Hospital
  • TJX Companies, Inc.
  • Flash Logistics
  • Genesis Health Care
