Clearwater, FL Colleges & Universities: Find Career Schools

Published: November, 2010

Clearwater, Florida, a city of 100,000, is a part of the Tampa Bay area on Florida's West Coast. The Tampa Bay area is home to 2.7 million people, making it the second largest metropolitan area in the state, after Miami. Clearwater, with its scenic beachside location, is close to the attractions of the bigger city of Tampa, with its three major sports teams, Busch Gardens, and myriad film festivals. Along with a developed marina and a booming arts scene, the Tampa Bay area is an attractive place to live, work, and study.

In 2005, the Tampa Bay area had an average per capita income of $33,250, placing it slightly lower than the national average. However, its growth rate was around 4%, in line with the rest of the country. Like most of Florida, Clearwater relies on services and tourism to fuel its economy. Local hotels, resorts, and tourist attractions are major employers. The Tampa Bay area has a steady population of winter-only residents, who come to get away from the cold and tend to increase cash flow into the area. The port of Tampa is the seventh-largest in the country and the largest in Florida, which also makes it an important contributor to the economy.

The future looks good for Clearwater. As the tourism industry in Florida continues to grow, Clearwater is putting money into new resources for tourists, such as the Beach Walk, a developed pedestrian waterfront that includes hotels, restaurants, and nightlife. Clearwater also has a downtown redevelopment plan in the works that will create new urban businesses and residential districts.
