Cambridge Colleges and Universities: Get Career Training and Education in MA

Published: November, 2010

Located at the county seat for Middlesex County, Cambridge has been called the "City of Squares." One-sixth of all jobs held by Cantabrigians (as residents are known) are with a college or university. It is the fifth most densely populated city in the U.S., with 101,000 people packed into tiny Bay State neighborhoods.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the 2005 median household income in Cambridge was $59,746, compared to the $46,242 national average. Cambridge's largest employers are its two universities, Harvard and MIT, with the balance of employers in biotech, healthcare, and high tech industries. The vast computer-industry sector that dominated the Cambridge landscape through the 1990s has declined and its companies no longer belong in the Top 25 employer list.

However, Cambridge has succeeded in transforming its even older manufacturing-based economy into a vibrant tech industry. In recent years, Cambridge has lured more than 65 premiere biotech firms to its vicinity, including Amgen, Transkaryotic Therapies, Biogen IDEC, Genzyme, Alkermes, and Wyeth Research.

Cambridge is host to more than 5,300 businesses, who hire candidates in health care, technology, and professional services. The city is also home to more than 150 social service agencies and nonprofit organizations, including:
  • Novartis
  • Harvard University
  • Massachusetts Institute of Technology
  • City of Cambridge
  • Biogen IDEC
