Allentown, PA Career Training and Education--Find Courses and Degree Programs

Published: November, 2010

Allentown, Pennsylvania is part of Lehigh Valley, along with Bethlehem, population 71,000; and Easton, population 26,000. According to Census Bureau estimates, total population for the 731 square-mile region exceeds 650,000 residents, who make a per capita income of $32,000 a year.

Whereas much of Pennsylvania was historically agriculturally based, Lehigh Valley has served mainly as a steel and anthracite coal production center. Throughout much of the 19th and 20th centuries, the Allentown area was a major player in industrial manufacturing, attracting both skilled and unskilled labor to help fuel America's need for large-scale steel production and energy.

Although the decline in the U.S. manufacturing industry has caused Allentown to suffer from intermittent economic slumps, a number of major employers remain, including:
  • Agere Systems
  • Air Products & Chemicals
  • Buckeye Pipe Line
  • Mack Trucks
  • Olympus Corporation
  • Pennsylvania Power and Light
  • Rodale Press

After the demise of Bethlehem Steel, Lehigh Valley Hospital and health network became the largest employer in the area (with 6,500 employees in Allentown alone). Allentown's growing service economy has compensated for the loss of manufacturing jobs. The city is also developing a downtown high-tech district to lure new businesses, and its cultural attractions include the Lehigh County Historical Society, Allentown Art Center, and the Civic Theatre of Allentown.
