| ARTICLE: Restaurant Management In-Depth |
Have you ever dreamed of owning your own restaurant, or taking charge of food management in a hotel? Jobs in commercial cooking are out there for the right people, and if you like the challenge of daily operations, the world of restaurant management awaits. As a manager in the hospitality industry, you take on many administrative duties while always making sure that your customer is happy. Sometimes hotel management and food management go hand in hand, ensuring that guests enjoy good food and service. The hospitality industry can be extremely demanding, but when operated efficiently, the success is gratifying.
Education and Skills
In order to get into restaurant management, it is essential to have strong communication skills and a keen sense of organization. Beyond this, having at least a bachelor's degree in hotel management or a related field is preferred. Many schools offer degrees catering to the hospitality industry and provide programs that cover all the basics:
- Commercial cooking
- Beverage management
- Accounting and business law
Within a campus-based program, you will often have the opportunity to get hands-on experience in specific fields such as beverage management through a restaurant internship. These programs can often lead into a position upon completion and will give you tons of experience along the way.
