| ARTICLE: Baking & Pastry In-Depth |
There's nothing quite as enchanting as the warm smell of a French patisserie wafting down the street, except perhaps the consumption of a heavenly French pastry. A baking and pastry degree could be your first step in creating that savory experience for the masses when you become a pastry chef. Learning the techniques of creating both the visually appealing rolls and fluffs of a patisserie as well as mastering the preparation so that they taste amazing are all skills you will need as a baker. Whether your goal is to open your own baking and pastry shop, or provide your skills as a pastry chef at a fine restaurant, you will need extensive training and experience.
Training
The best way to master the patisserie is by simply getting your hands in the dough, so to speak. The U.S. department of Labor and Statistics states that it can require years of training and practice under an experienced pastry chef before you are ready to become a professional baker. There are many independent baking and pastry schools that provide thorough instruction in patisserie as well cooking and safety skills. There are also many campus-based culinary institutions that will provide professional baking and pastry courses to help you get into a baking position upon graduation.
