| ARTICLE: Public Relations In-Depth |
Everyone needs an advocate. This is why huge firms, governmental figures, and interest groups need savvy public relations specialists on their side. Public relations demands powerful communication skills as well as an understanding of how to utilize the media to reach the consumer. Whether you work on behalf of a large company or as the spokesperson for a political figure, understanding the needs and attitudes of the public and projecting a positive image are all essential. Communications is the name of the game: you are the intercessor between the ideas and product that you represent, and the eyes and ears of the community to which you are selling.
How to Start A great way into public relations and communications is through marketing or advertising degrees. Some campus-based schools include their public relations studies in a journalism program. As a public relations and communications student, you might take classes in media writing and public relations principles. While no educational program can guarantee future salary or job prospects, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that marketing graduates earned an average annual salary of $34,038 in 2003. Of course, experience is often the most effective way of working your way into a public relations firm, and often internships are a vital component in getting hired. A communications or public relations degree coupled with a field-study program gives you the best chances of finding a job upon completion.
