How Did Schwab Become A Billionaire?

Charles R. Schwab is a master of investments. Consequently, his company Charles Schwab Co. is the leading discount stock brokerage in the United States. Long before Schwab assisted other people with their investments, he chose to invest in himself. As a result, his multi-billion dollar business career was realized.

Schwab's Early Investment: A Masters of Business Administration Degree

Growing up with dyslexia, Schwab faced several academic challenges, particularly with reading and writing. In spite of his disability, Schwab was committed to education, and his soaring achievements in math and science led Schwab to earn his business degree from Stanford. Schwab built his business career on a core understanding of economics, finance and investments.

What Did Schwab Do With His Business Degree?

By the time Schwab completed his business degree, he understood a thing or two about stocks, investments, and the exclusivity of the stock market to the very wealthy. He decided to change this, and in 1974, he became the founder and chairman of Charles Schwab Corporation. Opening the first discount brokerage firm in the United States, Schwab made a business career move that ultimately increased market participation to eight million investors worldwide.

What Are Schwab's Business Career Milestones?

  • In addition to his financial services, became one of the first to integrate ecommerce with investment transactions.
  • Wrote and published: How to Be Your Own Stockbroker (1995), Charles Schwab's Guide to Financial Independence (1998), and You're Fifty—Now What? (2002).
  • Chairman of Charles and Helen Schwab Foundation, which offers philanthropic assistance to learning disability and human services programs.

Schwab's Return on Investment

Schwab learned early on that academic determination and perseverance would be the key to a fruitful business career. Now, having served millions of investors with over $1 trillion in client assets, his vision of changing stock investment practices is illuminated by success.

Whether conquering his dyslexia by writing three books, or starting his own lucrative business, Schwab understands the profits a sound education can yield. Now, he reaps the rewards.

"You learn to see by practice. It's just like playing tennis, you get better the more you play.
The more you look around at things, the more you see. The more you photograph, the more you realize what can be photographed and what can't be photographed.
You just have to keep doing it."

-- Eliot Porter
