Question

I am 24 years old and a recent graduate in medical office studies. I want to work full-time, but would like to do so from home. Is this possible in the medical profession?

Answer

First, let me say that a medical office degree is a great qualification to have. Medical services are in high demand, and demographics indicate that demand should increase even more in the years ahead. Not only is the overall population growing, but the elderly remains the fastest-growing segment of the population. What's more, any move to expand healthcare insurance in the United States should result in rapid growth in the field as well.

So much for the good news. Now for the bad news. Try as I might, I'm having a hard time envisioning many options for you to work out of the home. A majority of medical occupations demand being available in-person, especially those that deal with patients. However, if you are willing to focus on the recordkeeping aspect of the profession, there may be hope. Because the industry in general is shifting from manual to computerized records, you might be able to work at a medical facility that needs help with the transition. Another possibility would be to contact medical insurance companies to see if they outsource any recordkeeping functions.

These are just a couple of medical office functions that you could perform from your home--if you have a computer and Internet access. But you may need to be patient and accept on-site jobs at first, until you have more experience and seniority in the field.
