Making a Career Change

Is voice/computer technology going to replace medical transcriptionists? I am considering a career in this field, but do not want to invest money in training if MTs will soon be obsolete.

Answer:
This is an excellent question, because my understanding is that there is a major technological revolution underway in all facets of medical recordkeeping. For a profession which strives to be on the leading edge of science, healthcare has been notably low-tech in all administrative aspects. In other words, it is remarkable how many critical recordkeeping tasks are still done by hand.

This inefficiency has been cited as a factor in both high medical costs and in the potential for errors and oversights. As a result, there is an impetus to update transcription methods in many healthcare organizations, and among industry analysts in general. Old habits die hard, but as a new generation of doctors and administrators comes on the scene, they may be eager to embrace new technology for transcription and other facets of recordkeeping.

Change creates opportunity, and you should look at the technological revolution in medical recordkeeping as your opportunity. Consider studying health information technology. As the industry updates its systems, people who are trained in the latest methods could be in great demand. This will get you into the field that interests you, but with cutting-edge skills rather than outdated ones.
