What Should I Do with my College Degree?

I just completed my first degree in economics and psychology (combined major). I seem to be lost in choosing the right career to get into. I have good social skills, I'm good with the computer, and work very hard. However, I don't have any idea what career path that adds up to.

Answer:
With an economics and psychology background, coupled with good social and computer skills, you certainly have a broad set of capabilities, and therefore, a large number of options. As liberating as that sounds, I know that having too many choices can also be debilitating--if all paths are open, it's hard to know which one to take. Therefore, let me make a couple of specific suggestions based on your background.

Working in the research department of an investment firm would not only utilize your economics degree, but it might also bring your psychology credential into play. Investor psychology is a growing field of study within financial circles. Alternatively, if you really like using your social skills, investment sales can be very rewarding as well. I have a bias in favor of independent investment advisory firms, but you can also find opportunities within the investment departments of banks and brokerage firms.

It should be noted that besides the skills you've developed in your education, you've also mentioned the most important ingredient for success--hard work. Keep that up and you're bound to succeed.
