Question
I'm a recent college graduate with a bachelor's degree in communications. I'm interested in working with kids. What career fields are best for me?
Answer
Let's look at this in two parts: first within the communications field, and then assuming you're open to getting some additional education to change career directions.
Within the communications field, there are many media productions targeted towards children. In fact, children's books are one of the healthiest sectors of the publishing industry, and of course, there are also periodicals, websites, and television shows designed for an audience of children.
Of course, working in media may involve producing content for children without actually giving you much interaction with them. If it's the interaction you desire, the most direct outlet might be working in daycare, but this does not pay as well as you'd have a right to expect with a bachelor's degree. Therefore, if you want to work directly with children, your best bet might be education.
Certainly, becoming a teacher would put your communications skills to work, but you will need some additional training as well. Teaching requirements differ from state to state, so check out your state's department of education to find out what you'll need. Chances are you'll need some specialized education coursework in order to get certified as a teacher. You might want to research online degrees in education if you need to start working in the meantime.
