Is It Too Late for a New Career?

I am 53 years old and plan to retire in the next couple years from a full-time job. When I do, I would like to work in the health care field. Do you think I am too old to study online to be a physical therapist's aide?

Answer:
Technically, no, as long as you can withstand the physical demands of the job. I would suggest that you find a degree program that incorporates an internship so you can get some hands-on experience. This experience should help you decide whether or not you're up for the demands of the job. If you are, that experience might help convince prospective employers that you are ready, willing, and able to do this kind of work.

It might be more difficult to find a hands-on internship with an online program than with a brick-and-mortar school. Nevertheless, you could set up something with an online school where you get credit for internship experience, as long as you are prepared to arrange for that experience yourself. Once you get approval from the school of your choice, check with local hospitals, assisted living facilities, or orthopedic surgeons to see if any of them have internship opportunities.

Furthermore, once you get your degree, your age can be a benefit when interviewing with prospective employers. Many patients who require physical therapy will be your age or older. There's a good chance they might feel more comfortable with a therapist's aide who is closer to their own age than with a younger college graduate.
