Question
I am caring for a relative with a terminal disease, and this is requiring me to decide on a career change. I am currently an administrative assistant who types 110 WPM, and medical transcription seems like a career I could pursue from home. However, I understand this field might be obsolete by 2010, so is it worth pursuing?
Answer
You are right to be concerned. There are two significant threats to medical transcription. First, voice recognition technology is becoming more and more reliable, which gives users the option of automating the process. Second, as computing devices have become as portable and as prevalent as dictation machines, a younger generation of doctors can opt to render their records directly into writing.
However, keep in mind that the medical profession is notoriously slow to embrace new administrative technologies, so medical transcription might be around for longer than expected.
There is another consideration. You are doing an admirable thing, but you have to ask yourself whether you want this to trigger a long-term change in careers or if this is just a period during which you are going to take a leave of absence. You may want to start by asking your current employer if they have any work you can do from home, as this is being embraced by more and more employers. Under the circumstances, they may be able to accommodate you.
