Question

I am an occupational therapy assistant with a bachelor's degree in liberal arts. I currently work in a nursing home and feel I could do more if I had a master's degree in gerontology, along with a certificate in geriatric care management. Will these skills be marketable?

Answer

Let's look at the big-picture answer first. The elderly represent the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. population, and one of the challenges this nation is expected to face in the years ahead is that the ratio of elderly to working people is likely to grow significantly. In short, you are targeting a field where it looks like demand is certain to increase.

To get a feel for whether the specific qualifications you are considering would be marketable, you'll need to look at the prerequisites for the types of jobs you'd like to apply for in the long run. The Gerontological Society of America website includes a careers page. Browse through some of the jobs in the field, and see whether a master's in gerontology and/or a certificate in geriatric care come up as requirements for the kinds of jobs that appeal to you.
