Question

I have been offered a job by a great recruiting company, but I'm having trouble deciding if this job is right for me. What are the pros and cons of a job like this?

Answer

I'm going to make the assumption that the job in question is a commissioned one, in which you will be responsible both for finding clients and for placing employees with those clients. This is how much of the recruiting business works. With that in mind, the following are not so much pros and cons, but characteristics of the job that should give you a feel for whether it will suit you.
  • Most of the job involves interacting with people. To do well, you have to not only like people, but be effective at influencing people. You'll need to convince businesses to come on board as clients, you'll need to build a professional network of people who will help you find talent, and you'll need to convince employees to be interested in the jobs you are offering.
  • Being commission-driven means that your income won't be certain. If you get paid for the placements you make, there can be a long lead-time before you start earning commissions. First you have to find clients to give you assignments, and then you have to place employees in those openings. If you are good at this, though, your base of clients and your network of contacts for finding talent will likely grow over time, meaning this can be a job with a strong financial upside if you get through the initial uncertainty.

Good luck!
