Question

Is HVAC a job for women?

Answer

HVAC--heating, ventilation, and air conditioning--work can be physically demanding, so there are some people, both men and women, who are not well suited to it. However, if you are in good physical condition and reasonably strong, there's no reason why you couldn't handle the demands of this physical work. In particular, if you like the idea of working in different locations and being active rather than being tied down to an office, this career might appeal to you.

Also, it should be noted that some aspects of HVAC are highly technical and less physical work than others. After all, the field involves everything from building and installing ventilation duct systems to maintaining complex, computer-driven climate control devices. The greater your aptitude with technology, the more you should be able to avoid the physically demanding side of the field if that concerns you.

To get a better feel for the demands of the job, research some HVAC educational programs and find out what's involved in the training. That should give you a better idea of how the field suits your aptitudes and abilities, and what specific areas of the profession you want to make your specialty. Looking longer-term, it helps if you live in an area where there is a lot of construction growth, since this can create a healthy demand for HVAC workers.
