Question
I am trying to decide between a master's degree in human resources and an MBA with a concentration in human resources. I am currently finishing up my undergraduate degree in organizational psychology, and I want a career in human resources. What do you recommend for the next level of my education?
Answer
It sounds like you have a strong sense of direction about your career, and so you probably can't go wrong with either program. But just for a moment, consider the possibility that you might change your mind about human resources once you get started on your career. The following are two ideas that would leave you with more options later on.
The first idea would be to try to get a job in HR on the strength of your bachelor's degree, and earn your graduate degree via a part-time or online program while you work. This will give you a feel for how well you like HR before you are locked into your graduate degree, and the extra experience certainly won't hurt you, should you decide to stick with HR.
The second suggestion would be to lean toward the MBA with a concentration in HR. The MBA would be a more versatile credential should you decide to go in a different direction, and should you stick with HR, it would be helpful to understand the broader business context as well.
