Question

I am 30yrs old and am interested in learning a new career. But I am not sure what field to go into. Any ideas on where to get started?

Thanks,
Angela

Answer

Hi Angela,

The best place to get started in trying to determine a new career is looking at your own interests. What do you enjoy doing in your free time? What subjects did you find most interesting in school? You'd be surprised what you can make a career out of, these days. If you like to read, for example, don't assume that your only career choice is to write the Great American Novel. A job in the publishing industry might fit the bill for you. The most enjoyable career experience is finding an occupation which you can completely devote yourself to and appreciate.

Also keep in mind that there are lots of career opportunities out there that may not align with interests of yours but are associated with good people and a successful organization. If your top priority is a good place to work, do some research and ask your friends what they love about their jobs. When you're around individuals that are supportive, you can really grow into a career. If you go into a field that's new to you, you may have to take a pay cut, but it's often a small price to pay to build a career.

Overall, the most important aspect of discovering a new career is utilizing your own interests and abilities while being around an employer that is supportive of career development. Good luck!
