Question
I am Annet Namwanga, a secretary by profession. I feel I lack management skills, conflict resolution skills, organizing skills. How can I control a busy office and remain focused?
Answer
Dear Annet,
One way to continue to build skills is to look for volunteer opportunities. Whether in a professional office, or community setting, volunteers can make an impact, and develop individual strengths. For example, you mentioned that you would like to work on skills related to conflict resolution and focus in a fast-paced environment--you might look for an organization that offers emergency services to individuals and families. This would require assessing a situation quickly, and recommending available options. As a volunteer, many times you can request the types of cases you are working on, so you can tailor those to the skills you want to build.
Another option is to consider higher education or professional development courses. There are many degree programs available in business administration, leadership and other skills. You might also be interested in a short-term, non-degree-granting course in management or conflict resolution, so you can develop your knowledge and abilities without the need for a long-term degree program. Best of all, you can take many of these courses online, whether you're in South Carolina or South Africa.
Best of luck.
