Question
I am interested in becoming a civil engineer. What is the outlook for this as a career, and what are the educational requirements?
Answer
The outlook for a civil engineering career is positive, for a few reasons. First of all, engineers are in demand, with starting salaries for college graduates among the highest of all professions. Second, civil engineering jobs are the most plentiful of all jobs for engineers, so you have chosen the right specialty. Third, there is a good reason to think that demand for civil engineers will grow in the years ahead. Civil engineers specialize in the design of transportation and other essential infrastructures. In many parts of the country, these infrastructures have become outdated and are badly in need of upgrading. You could further improve your odds by choosing a fast-growing part of the country. These areas tend to be well funded, and have a steady stream of new projects in the works.
Most engineering jobs require a bachelor's degree, and depending on what role you play, you may have to get state licensure. Each state has different licensing requirements, though they typically recognize licenses from other states. Finally, because there is always some element of cutting-edge technology involved in engineering, you should expect to make an ongoing commitment to continuing education, to stay up-to-date.
