Question
I am interested in a career involving math. What are some career options with a degree in math, and are these high-paying careers?
Answer
The answer depends a bit on what level math degree you get. Minimally, you want to at least get a bachelor's degree in math, and for certain teaching or high-level research jobs, you should consider a master's degree or even a doctorate in math.
In additon to teaching and research, some prominent occupations you could pursue with a degree in math include:
- Actuarial sciences. Actuaries are used heavily in the insurance industry, as well as by a number of government agencies. They focus on calculating the probability of certain events occuring, based on a variety of measurable factors.
- Engineering. Engineers work in a variety of capacities, dealing with things like architecture, infrastructure, and machines. Depending on which area of engineering you wanted to get into, you might want to augment your degree in math with some specialized course work.
- Finance. Banking and investments are very rewarding fields that place a high premium on strong quantitative skills.
- Computer sciences. There is a strong mathematical component to many areas of computer sciences, and you might find that these are very complementary fields of study.
- Health care product research and testing. Constructing computer models and compiling data for clinical testing are among the mathematical skills involved in the health care products industry.
All of the above have the potential for earning an income that is well above average, so if you do well in school you should find that earning a degree in math is well worth the investment of time and money.
