Making a Career Change

I have a degree in hotel and restaurant management, and have worked extensively in the hospitality industry. Now I feel that it is time for something in a more corporate setting, but I don't know how to make the transition. My experience includes managing dining facilities, training interns and staff, and running monthly financials. How can I transition into a corporate environment?

Answer:
It's been my personal experience that working in a restaurant can be excellent training for a corporate career. After all, the elements of hard work, customer orientation, and multi-tasking are all there. Still, some hiring managers may be tough to convince, so I understand your concern. I have three suggestions for you.

First, on your resume, highlight the management aspects of your past jobs. You mention managing, training, and finance--all areas very relevant to the corporate world. Position your background in terms of these responsibilities, and treat the setting for those responsibilities (i.e., the hospitality industry) as incidental.

Second, you might target event planning as a natural entry point into the corporate world for someone who knows the hospitality industry inside and out. This would normally be within the purview of a PR or marketing department, so direct your inquiries accordingly.

Finally, you may want to update your credentials with some online courses in finance or management. I'm sure your experience in those areas is valuable, but if you demonstrate some formal training to go with your experience, it might be easier for a hiring manager to see you in those roles. Good luck!
