Question
Hello,
I am very interested in pursuing a singing career. I know singing is something that only a select few do professionally and are good at it, but when people go to college for it, how many make it after college? How do they make it a career? What jobs are available for it?

Answer
Dear Ms. Barfield,
To gain experience in a performing arts career, you might consider joining a singing group, perhaps at a church or community center in your neighborhood. Or look into the local theater groups in your community. There are plenty of music courses you can take to strengthen your abilities.
Once you feel ready to start looking for real job opportunities, you might have to prepare a demo tape and maybe even find an agent to help you secure job interviews. Your career options are fairly wide-ranging, from singing on a cruise ship, to singing back-up vocals in studios, singing with a band for events and maybe even commercial jingles. It won't be glamorous at first, but if it's your dream, be willing to work for it.
Best of luck to you.
